Barred Rock
Barred Rocks are considered to be one of America's oldest heritage breeds of chickens as their lineage dates back to the early 1800's. Rocks originated in Massachusetts, making their first appearance in 1869. In 1874, this breed was accepted by the American Poultry Association as a standard breed. The goal of this breed was for a dual-purpose bird that was a productive egg layer as well as a large enough bird to produce meat.
Barred rocks lay approximately 250 - 280 medium to large brown eggs per year.
